Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) is an American AI lab that Ilya Sutskever, Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy announced on June 19, 2024, with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. Its stated mission is to build a safe superintelligence as its one goal and one product. As of October 5, 2026, SSI has released no public product.

Interest has held up anyway. In our Ahrefs check on October 5, 2026, “safe superintelligence” drew about 3,000 monthly searches in the US and 5,700 worldwide. The query “ssi ai” drew about 500 in the US and 1,000 worldwide. The newest official event is a long-term NVIDIA partnership announced on July 27, 2026. This explainer separates what SSI or its partners confirmed from what the press reported.

Safe Superintelligence timeline, 2024 to 2026

The official record of SSI is short: a founding statement on ssi.inc, two founding posts on X, three posts on its updates page and one NVIDIA press release. Every valuation and most deal sizes come from news reports that SSI has not confirmed.

What is Safe Superintelligence building? One goal and one product

SSI says it is building exactly one thing, a safe superintelligence, with no side products along the way. By design, the company name, the mission and the product roadmap all point to that one goal.

“Superintelligence is within reach,” the ssi.inc homepage opens. It calls SSI “the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab, with one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence,”.

The approach treats safety and capability as one engineering problem. SSI says it will “advance capabilities as fast as possible while making sure our safety always remains ahead,” working on both “in tandem” through scientific breakthroughs. Its business model keeps safety, security and progress “insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” the homepage says.

Sutskever used almost the same words at launch. “We will pursue safe superintelligence in a straight shot, with one focus, one goal, and one product,” he wrote in his June 19, 2024 post on X. Today the homepage describes “a lean, cracked team” focused on SSI and nothing else.

From the age of scaling to the age of research

Sutskever explained the strategy in a long interview on the Dwarkesh Podcast, published November 25, 2025. In his telling, “from 2020 to 2025, it was the age of scaling.” The field is now “back to the age of research again, just with big computers,” he said. For SSI, that means being “squarely an ‘age of research’ company” with research compute that is “really not that small,” as he put it.

Funding, valuation and compute partners

SSI has confirmed one funding round, $1 billion in September 2024, and NVIDIA has confirmed an investment of undisclosed size in July 2026. SSI has never published a valuation, so the widely cited $32 billion figure from April 2025 is a press report.

What SSI and NVIDIA confirmed

“We’ve raised $1B from NFDG, a16z, Sequoia, DST Global, and SV Angel,” SSI wrote on its updates page on September 4, 2024. The post gave no valuation.

On July 27, 2026, NVIDIA and SSI announced a long-term strategic partnership, and NVIDIA said it “has additionally made an investment in SSI,” without naming an amount. The release says the investment plus access to the Vera Rubin platform “will allow SSI to increase its compute by an order of magnitude.” SSI’s own update puts that at 10x. The release lists Andreessen Horowitz, DST Global, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital among SSI’s investors.

The same release offers the only official hint about the research itself. It says SSI spent two years on a new research direction and that NVIDIA invested after gaining “rare access” to that work. “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so,” Sutskever said in the release.

What the press reported

  • Reuters reported on September 4, 2024, that the first round valued SSI at $5 billion.
  • In April 2025, the Financial Times first reported a further $2 billion at a $32 billion valuation, led by Greenoaks. TechCrunch reported that SSI did not comment. Some summaries give $30 billion because Bloomberg reported in February 2025 that SSI was in talks to raise money at a valuation of more than $30 billion.
  • Reuters reported in April 2025, citing a source, that Alphabet and Nvidia had invested. All three companies declined to comment.
  • NVIDIA did not disclose the amount. Bloomberg reported about $5 billion, and TechCrunch, citing a source, reported “multiple billions” on July 27, 2026.

Two compute suppliers

Safe Superintelligence has compute deals with two suppliers, Google Cloud and NVIDIA. On April 9, 2025, Google Cloud said SSI uses its TPUs to “accelerate its research and development efforts toward building a safe, superintelligent AI,” according to TechCrunch. TechCrunch, citing a source, described Google Cloud as SSI’s primary compute provider at the time. NVIDIA became the second on July 27, 2026, with Vera Rubin access that SSI says will scale its compute by 10x.

Who founded and leads Safe Superintelligence?

Ilya Sutskever is CEO of Safe Superintelligence and Daniel Levy is President. The third co-founder, Daniel Gross, left on June 29, 2025.

The founding statement on ssi.inc, dated June 19, 2024, was signed by Ilya Sutskever, Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, according to an archived copy in the Internet Archive. AP, reporting the launch on June 20, 2024, described Sutskever as one of the founders of OpenAI. The current homepage names no founders, while NVIDIA’s July 2026 release names Sutskever and Levy as the company’s leaders.

The leadership change came in a message Sutskever posted on X on July 3, 2025, also reproduced on ssi.inc/updates. “I am now formally CEO of SSI, and Daniel Levy is President,” he wrote, and the technical team continues to report to him. The note also addresses “rumors of companies looking to acquire us,” saying SSI is focused on seeing its work through.

Bloomberg reported on July 3, 2025, that Meta had hired Gross for its new superintelligence lab. Sutskever’s note thanks Gross for “his early contributions to the company” but names no new employer.

How many people work at SSI

SSI does not publish its headcount. Reuters reported 10 employees in September 2024, a figure that is now two years old. The homepage describes a “lean, cracked team” and offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv, where SSI says it can recruit top technical talent.

Has SSI released anything?

No. As of October 5, 2026, Safe Superintelligence has not publicly released a model, product, API or research paper.

The updates page lists three posts: the funding round of September 4, 2024, the leadership note of July 3, 2025 and the NVIDIA partnership of July 26, 2026. None of them announces a product. NVIDIA’s release describes SSI’s research only in general terms.

Press rumors of a release have circulated, but none came from SSI. As of October 5, 2026, it has announced no model or release date.

On Reddit’s r/singularity, users question what SSI has to show after two years without a product. Sutskever has said a straight-shot plan does not mean one sudden launch. “Even in the straight shot scenario, you would still do a gradual release of it,” he told Dwarkesh Patel.

Can I invest in Safe Superintelligence?

Not on public markets. Safe Superintelligence is a privately held company with no public shares and no stock ticker, and SSI has made no official statement about retail or public investment.

Every named investor is a venture firm or a strategic partner. SSI named NFDG, a16z, Sequoia, DST Global and SV Angel in 2024, NVIDIA named itself and listed Greenoaks in 2026, and Reuters reported Alphabet in 2025. We do not give investment advice; this section only describes how SSI is owned.

The name and the domain: why ssi.inc

Safe Superintelligence uses ssi.inc as its website domain. The .inc extension is a generic top-level domain, and SSI is the company’s acronym, which it also uses as its brand. The homepage, the updates page and the contact page all sit on ssi.inc, and the jobs board links from there.

The choice matches the homepage line calling SSI “our mission, our name, and our entire product roadmap,” so the acronym does three jobs. In our reading, the .inc extension also echoes the legal name, Safe Superintelligence Inc.: one 3-letter domain carries both the acronym and the company form. Our comparison of superintelligence domains sets this choice next to the routes other AI labs took.

The letters SI gained a wider meaning in 2026. President Trump used the term “super intelligence” in his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 22, 2026. On September 29, he signed Executive Order 14434. It directs executive branch departments and agencies to use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI.”

.si is Slovenia’s country-code domain. For AI companies it reads as SuperIntelligence. That reading is our framing, not an official meaning, and we found no SSI statement that links its name to .si. Our guide to the .si domain covers the 2026 registration numbers, and our .ai domain guide covers the extension many AI companies use.

What to watch next

The clearest signals come from three primary sources: SSI’s updates page, NVIDIA’s releases and Sutskever’s posts on X. Read anything else as a report until one of them confirms it.

  • A first release: no post on ssi.inc/updates names a model yet. Check that page before trusting a launch report.
  • Compute: Sutskever called Vera Rubin “our big bet,” and NVIDIA said it will raise SSI’s compute by an order of magnitude. Look for any official word that this compute is in use.
  • Funding and valuation: the last widely reported figure dates from April 2025. Label any new number as reported until a primary source confirms it.

For readers comparing labs, our explainer on what superintelligence is and who is building it places SSI next to OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft. For founders naming a company in this space, SSI shows one pattern: a descriptive legal name, a 3-letter acronym and a short domain built on that acronym.
